I believe a word of encouragement after failure is worth more than an hour of praise after success. We are no doubt facing hard times in Spain. The once domain labelled (tierra de trabajo) is now a shadow of it’s old glory, facing the greatest depression in 60 years.
In the face of this economic crisis, what do we do? Sit down and weep? No God forbid. Life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger, even though it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop characters, and we must learn that the setbacks and grief which we ever endure, help make us a better man - in judgement and character.
We have come this far, panic will not change the reality of our present situation. There are those who look at things the way they are and ask why, but great minds dream of things that never were and say why not. That’s what should keep us going at this point in time .......” why not that this crisis won’t be over; Why not that we can’t survive this hard times; why not that Spain will not stand on her feet again “.
Let us seize this moment, regarding it as a time of break and make use of the session to think, rethink and plan ahead. Especially those with Spanish Residence Permit, yet right now are out of jobs. Please use this moment to enlarge your coast. Instead of sitting at home doing nothing and eating your paro, use this opportunity to do something else, like going to school or learn a trade. There are several free courses the governmental bodies in charge offers and their are trades too. Reach out to your local offices (Ayutamiento) and ask for directions, they will assist you with a guide on how to go about it. Prepare yourself for the transformation that is coming to Spain.
It is quite obvious that the reliance on unskilled labour has failed Spain totally and no doubt the new Spain will be built on the back of skilled labourers as is the case of every super powers, the real developed countries of the world today. During one of the parliamentary debate on the state of the nation, Zapatero the president of Spain acknowledged the flaws in Spain's economic structure, and announces moves towards reorienting the economy. And one of them was to supply free laptop computers for half a million schoolchildren, in an attempt to demonstrate the government's drive to increase technological know-how. You don’t have to be told what this mean. Spain is restructuring in a new dimension. And unlike in the past unskilled labour will be less required and skilled labour will receive more attention.
The language is a barrier, so we can’t study here. This has been our greatest excuses. Why choose to stay in their country if we can’t learn their language. Nothing is un surmountable. The truth is... It is not because it is difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that it seems difficult. Its never easy to get to the mountain top, but from the mountain top we can reach the sky. Majority of the Spanish citizens are not interested in education. We can fill that vacuum for them to enrich their country and ourselves even more. The world is moving fast these days that the man who say it can’t be done is generally interrupted by someone doing it. I can bear witness of a young Nigerian teacher here in Spain, who studied here and today teaches in one of their schools. The Nigerian lawyer in Madrid is another good example.
Let these words that made Barack Obama to think the unthinkable and achieve the near impossible “ YES WE CAN “ be our new anthem. As we move on, let us never look down to test the ground before taking our next step, because only those who will keep their eyes fixed on the far horizon will find the right road.
I am so optimistic that the latter Spain will be greater than the former. I foreseen great harvest and abundance. And I pray that God Almighty give us the strength to get there. Let us be encouraged and encourage one another. Even the longest night still ends in daybreak. Let us help our brothers and sisters here in need whenever we are opportune to. Let us aim above morality, not simply be good, but be good for something. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or even the smallest act of care.... And all these have the potential to turn a life around.
My fellow brothers and sisters in this great land of Spain. Even in the face of hopelessness, I guarantee you hope. The God that brought us this far neither sleep nor slumber. Let us continually seek His face and pray on behalf of this land, that God should send us the latter rain. Let us plead the blood of Jesus Christ upon the sins of this land and stand in the gap between God and the land for economic growth and stabilization. Lastly, let us be diligent in whatever we know how to do best in order to achieve even the impossible. In every heavenly intervention, there must be an earthly contribution.
